Maurice Ashley to lecture and play blitz in Madison (download the pdf with more information)
Maurice AshleyThe Wisconsin Chess Association is pleased to be a co-sponsor of a chess event that will bring GM Maurice Ashley to Madison, August 15-16. At 9:00 AM, Mr. Ashley will be at Wright Middle School, Madison, for a talk on Chess and Aikido: Metaphors for Life, a Blitz with Brian Luo - Top rated 10 year old in the nation. At 2:00 P.M. he will be at the University of Wisconsin Campus - Memorial Union where his talk will be on Experiences of a Grandmaster, and he will play 2 youth plus 3 guests in a one against many exhibition.

Large Chess Set Event  (08-07-2004)

How does getting paid $350 for playing chess sound to you?  Well, the GBCA, Leadership Green Bay, and Washington Commons invite all chess players to enter one of the largest paying chess competitions in the state.  This non-rated, spectacular event consists of 10 qualifying rounds for 32 allotted berths into the final draw on October 9.  Since this tournament is open to the general public, no USCF membership is required.  The final games are scheduled to be played on the giant chess sets in the Center Food Court at beautiful Washington Commons for all to see!  Click here for more details...

Belarus On the Bay  (07-20-2004)

No, this is not the same article!  One might think that as you go up the rating scale, a couple hundred rating points difference would not mean as much.  IM Stan Smetankin proved this not to be the case, as he rolled through the 28th Annual Green Bay Open with the only perfect score.  There was a seven-way tie for second place.  See complete results...

Belarus On the Bay  (07-10-2004)

For the first time in its long 28 year history, the Green Bay Open will host an International Master!  IM Stanislav Smetankin has registered to compete in this coming weekend's GBO.  Smetankin is rated 2522 USCF and has finished at the top of every US tournament he's entered in 2004.  He currently ranks 43rd in the US and is one of the Top 1000 players in the World.  Welcome Stan!

2004 Green Bay Open  (06-27-2004)

One of Wisconsin's longest running events heads into its 28th year.  Last year's GBO attracted the most participants out of all Wisconsin tournaments, and the Green Bay Chess Association hopes to continue that success July 17-18 at the Midway Hotel.  All ages and all levels of players are welcome!  Prizes will be given for many accomplishments.  See details and register online...

The MASCA r Aid  (06-08-2004)

The Milwaukee Area Scholastic Chess Association, formerly known as Mequon Scholastic Chess Association, sponsors scholastic tournament by providing tournament directors, chess equipment and expertise needed to offer a scholastic tournament.  In addition, the association acts as a sponsor for chess teams at the elementary, middle school and high school level.  Visit the MASCA...

Lilly and Xu Win State Championship  (06-01-2004)

It was a five way tie going into the final round of the Marshall Rohland Memorial on none other than Memorial Day.  Yuan Jia Xu and Bryan Lilly secured their places as co-champions by fighting off Larry Butler and Patrick McElwee respectively.  Meanwhile Kelly Borman and Josiah Stein agreed to a quick draw to tie for third place.  See complete results...

State Championship Press Release  (05-22-2004)

The 71st Annual Wisconsin State Chess Championship will come to Green Bay on Memorial Day weekend, May 29, 30, and 31.  Over 60 challengers from all over the state are expected to compete for the 1st place title, the Ernest Reel Trophy and cash awards.  Read more...

USCF Membership Promotion  (05-18-2004)

For a limited time, the United States Chess Federation is offering a special promotional adult/regular one year membership for those who have never been members, or whose membership expired in 2002 or earlier.  The special membership, available through the USCF website only, costs $38 for one year, $67 for two years, or $95 for three years.  It includes a monthly Chess Life magazine and full membership benefits.  See more details...
