The 71st
Annual Wisconsin State Chess Championship will come to Green Bay on
Memorial Day weekend, May 29, 30, and 31. Over 60 challengers from
all over the state are expected to compete for the 1st place title, the
Ernest Reel Trophy and cash awards.
The Green Bay Chess Association,
who is hosting the 2004 event, invites all Wisconsin chess players and
enthusiasts to attend the three day tournament, which will be held at
the Radisson Hotel, 2040 Airport Drive, Green Bay. Prizes and
trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, in both the Open and
Reserve sections. There will also be cash awards for the Class A
winner, the Under-1800 winner, and trophies for Class C, D, E, F, and
Unrated bests. A Kittsley Upset Prize is also being sponsored.
The Wisconsin Championship is also
known as the "Marshall Rohland Memorial Wisconsin Closed Championship".
Rohland was a dedicated Milwaukee chess player who devoted his life to
chess and actively promoted the game through both state and national
organizations.
The tournament is open to anyone
who a a United States Chess Federation member and has Wisconsin
residency. Advance registration is recommended, but on site
registration with a $6 late fee will be accepted between 10:00 and 11:15
on Saturday, May 29, at the Radisson. Membership forms for the
USCF will also be available on the day of the tournament. Advance
registration is $30 for the Open, $20 for the Reserve, with a $6
discount for all Junior players. Contact the tournament director,

will be a "Skittles Room", a giant chess set, and the Wisconsin Chess
Association will hold their Annual Meeting with election of their Board
