(1) Kasparov,Garry (2830) - X3D-Fritz (2753) [D45]
Man vs. Machine New York, USA (3), 16.11.2003

1.Nf3 Miss New York announced the first move in wordy fashion. I doubt the voice-recognition software understood what she said.

1...Nf6
The programmers delayed Fritz's response to allow photographers a chance to snap a few shots. Team-Fritz made certain to have everything right for this game. Before the start of Game 2, the virtual reality board was setup backwards, prompting Garry to scold the Arbiter in the postgame discussion.

2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 d5 4.d4 c6 5.e3 a6
Kaspy was very disgruntled with this move. Any preparations of an early g4 pawn push are out the door. Garry now goes into a deep think and recalls a 1948 game Samuel Reshevsky-Paul Keres as his continuation. Unfortunately, Keres won that game.

6.c5 Nbd7 7.b4 a5 8.b5 e5 9.Qa4 Qc7 10.Ba3 e4 11.Nd2 Be7 12.b6 Qd8 13.h3 0-0 14.Nb3 Bd6
A very non-human move. The bishop is immune from capture (15.cxd6? Nxb6 and the Queen is toast). Another enticing capture 15.Nxa5 loses to 15... Nxb6 16.cxb6 Bxa3 17.Qxa3 Qxb6.

15.Rb1 Be7
What was the point of moving the bishop to the b8-h2 diagonal?

16.Nxa5 Nb8 17.Bb4 Qd7 18.Rb2 Qe6 19.Qd1 Nfd7 20.a3 Qh6 21.Nb3 Bh4
Fritz makes an idle threat on e3 without necessarily improving its position. Most agreed that Black's only active plan was to break with an f-pawn descent.

22.Qd2 Nf6 23.Kd1
Kasparov starts a march to safety. He sees that his opponent is finding little to do.

23...Be6 24.Kc1 Rd8 25.Rc2 Nbd7 26.Kb2 Nf8 27.a4
The a-pawn continues its trek up the board, eventually creating a passer. Simple chess, isn't it?

27...Ng6 28.a5 Ne7
That knight is out of breath!

29.a6 bxa6
Garry temporarily gives back the pawn. However, Black's weaknesses on a6 and c6 will allow White to infiltrate on the Queenside.

30.Na5 Rdb8 31.g3 Bg5 32.Bg2 Qg6 33.Ka1 Kh8 34.Na2 Bd7 35.Bc3 Ne8 36.Nb4 Kg8 37.Rb1
Garry constructively organizes his pieces while Fritz does the hokey-pokey.

37...Bc8 38.Ra2 Bh6 39.Bf1 Qe6 40.Qd1 Nf6 41.Qa4 Bb7
It's interesting to note that Fritz's evaluations have been in favor of Black ever since Kaspy forfeited his right to caslte. The computer doesn't understand the severity of Black's position.

42.Nxb7 Rxb7 43.Nxa6 Qd7 44.Qc2 Kh8 45.Rb3
The Fritz Team decided to put their competitor out of its misery and resigned 1-0
