From Saturday Spectacular
(11-24-2003)
The
Green Bay Chess Association continued its efforts to promote chess in
the Northeast Wisconsin area by hosting a class for kids at this past
weekend's Saturday Spectacular. You can learn more about the
Saturday Spectacular program in our recent article "Saturday
Spectaculars Kickoff". The children were a fantastic audience.
After an instructional session, the students participated in a
Queen-odds simul against one of the GBCA members. A fun time was
had by all and we have the pictures to prove it!

Neck
and Neck in New York
(11-18-2003)
Once again a
man vs. machine event ends in a match draw. Fritz surprised Garry
by opening with its Queen-Pawn, but the World's best player strived for
an equal game with the Queen's Gambit Accepted. On move 13, it was
expected that Kasparov would go into a line that gives his Queen for a
Rook, Bishop, and Pawn. But Garry settled for a simple line that
fizzled the game down to a power-piece ending. A draw was agreed
upon within just two hours of play.

It's
Simple...Keep the Door Closed
(11-16-2003)
The
multiprocessor machine X3D-Fritz is running on allows it to evaluate
over four million positions per second. Even with this ability,
Fritz looked like a dog chasing its tail in a fenced yard during Game 3
of the Man vs. Machine event. Kasparov closed the position early
and gave nothing for the silicon monster to focus on. Garry even
had time to walk his King to safety, meanwhile the Fritz pieces did the
hokey-pokey. The match is now even at 1.5-1.5 with the final
deciding game to be played Tuesday, Novemeber 18.

To
Err Is Not Computer
(11-13-2003)
In a shocking
turn of events, the best human player in the World blundered in an equal
position to instantly enter into a lost game. During any human
versus human chess game, you can expect that opponents will return the
favor of an error. The same cannot be said about today's top chess
engines. One slip, and it's all over. Kasparov worked the
whole game to neutralize the position only to play 32... Rg7? and allow
X3D-Fritz an immediate win. Garry walked around the room shaking
his head in disgust before Fritz even made its capitalizing move.
