Space Advantage?

Garry Kasparov
will again represent mankind in a four game match against one of the
strongest computer chess engines in the World, Fritz. The match
begins November 11 and will take place in a 3D virtual reality
environment, requiring Garry to wear special glasses and speak his moves
to the computer. ESPN will be covering all four games live with
host Maurice Ashley and expert commentator Yasser Seirawan. Also,
chess.fm will have Internet chess
radio coverage with host Tony Rook and guest GM John Fedorowicz. Read

Quiet You Can Hear a Pawn Drop

Youth chess
players from across America will compete for post-secondary scholarships
totaling $13,500 during the 2004 AmericInn Lodging National Youth Chess
Championship in St. Paul, Minn., Feb. 21, 2004. Qualifying rounds
will be held at AmericInn properties nationwide the first four weekends
of November 2003, for chess players 19 years of age and younger.

Comet Quick Chess Tournament

You and your
team are cordially invited to participate in the 4th Annual Comet Quick
Chess Tournament which will be played on Saturday, November 15th, 2003.
The tournament will feature both Varsity and JV Sections, with the
Varsity Section being run as a Team Swiss event, and the JV Section as a
6-Round Swiss System individual event. Each school will be allowed
5 varsity players and an unlimited number of JV players.

Chess Club Championships Underway

The
preliminary tournament is complete and the round-robin finals have
begun. Two-time defending champion Kelly Borman returns to compete
against five qualifiers. Newcomer Jason Delpire gets off to a hot
start by winning his first two games, including a shocking upset of the
champ!

Good
Things Come in Fours?

Twelve players from the Northeast
Wisconsin area battled it out in groups of fours at the De Pere
Community Center. Kelly Borman and Ben Roberts claimed
victory in the top sections, while the third group saw a three-way tie
for first.

Although the
Green Bay Chess Association will not be letting its founder, Luke
Ludwig, get away completely, his term as GBCA President has concluded.
Elections for the new GBCA Board were held at the Annual Meeting
September 20. Former Vice-President, Doug Younkle, has been named
Luke's successor, along with a fine staff as listed on our
About Us

Goes Perfect to Win 27th GBO

This year's
Green Bay Open once again attracted a large field (the largest so far in
Wisconsin). All were comfortably accommodated at the Midway Hotel
near the new Resch Center. Nine players with 4.0 points fell short
of National Master Alex Betaneli's perfect 5.0 score. Thanks to
Luke Ludwig and Nathan Schaan for running such a fantastic event!

A
Sequel Better Than the Original?

Three area
high schools were represented in the 2nd Annual Brown County High School
Chess Championships. With last year's winner missing due to
Senioritis, the field was hungry to find a new king. The
Swiss-system event produced an exciting four-way tie. Would a
simple tiebreak playoff of blitz games determine a single champion to
crown?

Tournament 2003
